Milestone Studio Session Guide

Milestone Studio Session Guide

First thing first.... Relax!

Milestone sessions are designed to celebrate your little one's personality and this exciting stage of life. Every baby is different, and it's completely normal if they need a little time to warm up to a new environment.

My goal is to keep the session fun, relaxed, and stress-free for everyone.

Choosing the best session time

From experience, babies tend to do best shortly after a nap and a full tummy.

For this reason, I typically recommend scheduling sessions:

  • Late morning, or
  • Early afternoon

We'll work together to choose a time that best fits your baby's nap schedule.

What to bring

Please bring:

  • Snacks and drinks for baby
  • A favorite comfort item (stuffed animal, blanket, etc.)
  • A backup outfit if you're planning a cake smash (or anything from GVP Baby Client Wardrobe)
  • Any special heirloom items you'd like included

Parents are welcome to join!

I always encourage parents to hop into a few photos at the beginning of the session.

This helps your little one feel comfortable, allows them to explore the studio environment, and gives us a chance to capture a few beautiful parent-and-baby images before we move on to individual portraits.

Cake smash information

Cake smashes are always saved for the very end of the session. If you choose to bring a cake, simple is best! Babies are often more interested in exploring the texture than the design.

I recommend:

  • Neutral or pastel-colored frosting
  • Simple decorations
  • Avoiding dark or highly pigmented frosting

A few days before your session, consider letting your baby try a cupcake or a little frosting at home. This helps them become familiar with the texture and can make them more comfortable getting messy during their session.

Studio props included

Props included at the studio for use:

  • client closet for the whole family, wooden rocking horse, wooden high chair, faux florals, your choice balloon colors, #1 golden balloon, One wooden cake topper, white backdrop.

Props provided by parents:

  • Cake, any specific balloons, banners, specific outfits.

If you have a specific theme or color palette in mind, please let me know before your session!

Styling & Clothing Guidance

For studio sessions, less is more when it comes to color. I recommend keeping your palette soft and neutral to allow the focus to stay on your connection.

Please avoid bright neon colors, bold patterns, heavy logos, or very dark color schemes. Soft textures, simple layers, and coordinated tones photograph beautifully in studio light.

What Photographs Best:

  • Soft neutrals and muted tones
  • Creams, ivory, beige, camel
  • Soft browns, warm grays
  • Muted greens and blues
  • Simple textures and light layering

After your session

Within approximately 2-3 weeks, you'll receive an online proofing gallery featuring around 30–50 hand-edited images.

Your milestone session includes 15 digital images of your choice. Once you receive your gallery, you'll be able to select your favorites and download them directly.

If you fall in love with more than 15 images (which happens often!), additional images and full gallery upgrades will also be available for purchase.

Once your selections have been made, you'll receive your final gallery to download and enjoy.

FAQ

What if my baby is shy or doesn't smile?

That's completely normal! I allow plenty of time for your little one to warm up and follow their lead throughout the session.

Can parents or siblings be in a few photos?

Absolutely! I encourage parents to join in for a few images at the beginning of the session.

Do I need to bring a cake?

Nope! A cake smash is completely optional.

What should the cake look like?

Simple cakes photograph beautifully. Neutral colors and minimal decorations tend to work best.

What if my baby doesn't like the cake?

No worries! Not every baby loves cake. We can still capture plenty of adorable reactions and milestone portraits.

Can I purchase additional images?

Yes! Additional images and full gallery upgrades will be available when your gallery is delivered.

Most important tip

Don't worry about getting your baby to smile on command. Some babies laugh, some are curious, some are serious observers. Every expression tells part of their story, and my job is to capture them exactly as they are in this season of life.

I can't wait to celebrate this milestone with your family!
